Bundesliga Matchday 33 round-up Bayern smiling and Mainz safe after Super Saturday goal glut: the Matchday 33 round-up

On a goal-filled afternoon on Matchday 33, Bayern Munich edged RB Leipzig in a game for the ages, while Mainz secured their top-flight status for another season.

Leipzig 4-5 Bayern Munich

Spare a thought for us reporters on days such as this. Leipzig were 3-1 and 4-2 up in this game and seemingly in control of proceedings, with their fans even ‘olé-ing’ some of the home side’s passes in the second half. Yet Bayern are not the champions for nothing. Three goals in the final six minutes, including a truly sensational solo winner by Arjen Robben, now 33, gave them all three points and spoiled what was turning into a wonderful afternoon for the eastern upstarts.

Augsburg 1-1 Borussia Dortmund

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did what Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang does: score against Augsburg. That’s now eight goals in eight games against them for the Gabon international, but he remains one behind Robert Lewandowski in the goalscoring stakes. Augsburg, meanwhile, are not yet safe but know that a point on the final day will keep them up.

Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 1. FC Cologne

When you’re in a rut and slipping down the table, there’s nothing like a local derby to refocus the mind. Leverkusen had lost three of their last five matches and drawn the other two, and it looked like they would lose another when Cologne opened up a two-goal lead. Cue Stefan Kießling and Joel Pohjanpalo to rescue the home side and guarantee their Bundesliga safety. Let’s not forget: Leverkusen contested a UEFA Champions League last-16 tie only a couple of months ago.

Mainz 4-2 Frankfurt

Speaking of local derbies, this win will taste sweeter than most for those of a Mainz persuasion. Unfortunate to find themselves two goals behind, they rallied to score four without reply and guarantee survival for another year. Quite a way to sign off in front of the home faithful.

Wolfsburg 1-1 Borussia Mönchengladbach

Sticking with the relegation battle, Wolfsburg earned another point here that again begs the question: where would they be without Mario Gomez? This was his 16th goal of the season and his 12th in 2017. The Wolves will discover their fate on the campaign’s final day.

Bremen 3-5 Hoffenheim

On to bonkers game no.2. Having won nine of their previous 12 matches, falling 5-0 down in their final home game of the season wasn’t in the script for Werder Bremen on Saturday. A comeback was beyond Alexander Nouri’s men but at least they provided us with some riveting entertainment. Bravo, lads!

Schalke 1-1 Hamburg

Is the sun setting on Hamburg’s 54 years in the Bundesliga? They fought hard for a point here but remain in the relegation play-off spot and must beat Wolfsburg next weekend to guarantee survival. Otherwise it’s a third play-off duel against a Bundesliga 2 side in the last four years for the top flight’s only ever-presents.

Freiburg 1-1 Ingolstadt

So long, Ingolstadt. They’ve been a tough cookie in the last two campaigns and deserve credit for surviving last term, as well as for staying the course for so long this season after a poor start. Alas, back they go to Bundesliga 2 but we’ll hope to see them back soon.

Darmstadt 0-2 Hertha Berlin

Already relegated, Darmstadt were unable to give their fans the send-off they’d have wished for in their final home game. Hertha, meanwhile, waited until their final away trip to snap a run of successive away losses that had stretched to nine matches. Better late than never.
