Atletico Madrid missed the chance to close the gap with third placed Barcelona to three points after a controversial 1-1 draw with Betis at the Estadio de Mendizorroza. Diego Simeone’s side who were without first-choice goalkeeper Jan Oblak and captain Gabi, due to injury and suspension respectively, produced a disappointing performance away from home against the 12th placed side.

Despite the goalless scoreline, the fixture will be a topic of much discussion over the coming days after Atleti stalwart Diego Godin and opposition striker Deyverson – were involved in a spitting row.

Sixth placed Villarreal moved within two points off the top four after an impressive display against relegation favorites Granada, to record a 2-0 victory at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

The Yellow submarine scored goals on either side of the break with midfielder Bruno opening the scoring in the 42nd minute and left-back Álvaro González grabbing the second in the 72nd minute. Nazaríes have only picked up one win all season and despite the presence of new striker Adrian Ramos up front, Lucas Alcaraz side seem like certainties for the drop – eight points from safety.

Eibar moved into ninth place after a win over Deportivo de La Coruña at the Municipal de Ipurua, with Adrián, Sergi Enrich and Florian Lejeune all scoring in a 3-1 victory.

Adrian and Enrich helped the home side race into a two goal lead before Emre Colak reduced the deficit in the 19th minute but Lejeune’s 72nd minute strike made sure José Luis Mendilibar’s side walked away with all three points.

And in the final game of the day, Celta de Vigo moved as high as seventh at the expense of Athletic Bilbao after a hard fought 2-0 win over 17th placed Leganes.

Centre-back Álvaro Lemos 32nd minute goal and John Guidetti’s penalty on the hour mark, was enough for the in-form side to pick up the points at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque.

Results in full:

Villarreal 2-0 Granada

Alavés 0-0 Atlético

Eibar 3-1 Deportivo

Leganés 0-2 Celta
